Sustainability (ESG)

Sustainability is the practice of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, through an integrated approach that balances environmental protection with economic development.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a framework established by the United Nations that encompasses economic, social, and environmental balance, such as mitigating climate change, reducing inequality, and promoting responsible economic management. ESG principles represent an approach applied primarily at the level of companies and organisations, but also by states, which supports the same objectives: environmental protection, social responsibility, and transparent governance. ESG is therefore a tool for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainable development is important for Estonia, and the principles of environmental protection, social responsibility, and good governance are followed in national policy-making. The objectives are based on national-level strategies and activity-based budgeting.

Estonia is a small and infrequent issuer. Therefore, the focus is primarily on ensuring the liquidity of bonds, which is why there are currently no plans to issue thematic or labelled bonds.
